Reflection 1

Interviewee: Abdul Aziz

Interviewers: Hedley, Aziz & Abdulla Ali Al Mara

Position: assistant football coach, Real Madrid

Hedley began by inviting Abdul Aziz to introduce himself briefly, which he did confidently.

Aziz asked if he could cope with pressure & he replied that he worked well in such a situation. How can you help the coach? He's the best in the world & my role model. Have you had any formal training as a football coach?

Abdulla Ali expressed concern re. the applicant's lack of experience. Abdul Aziz said he'd studied Mr Maurinho very carefully to see how he handles different situations & so learned a lot. Asked to discuss the pros & cons of studying at ADMC, he said the good thing was that English was strong and the teaching staff very cosmopolitan; there were no really bad things except lack of choice of subjects, apart from his major; he bemoaned the fact that he'd studied art appreciation last semester.

The only question Abdul Aziz had for his interviewers concerned his precise duties.

Position: mecatronic engineer with Atek

Greetings and introductions were cordial and satisfactory.

When asked about his strengths, Ahmed said he was a good communicator, hard-working, well-organised and a creative thinker.
Goals? having a leadership position with Atek; trying to improve Atek.
Night or weekend work? If necessary to get job done.
Working under pressure? Keeps me motivated. I can deal with stress. I don't get pressurised. I go to the gym to relieve pressure.
Why did you leave your previous position? I enjoyed it but there was not enough challenge & no room for advancement.
Weakness? Trusting others to do what I tell them.

Position: teacher of mecatronics in a college

What is the role of a good teacher? Work hard, convey meaning clearly, be patient.

Under pressure? Yes, it motivates me.

In 3 years time? good job, having a family. I want to help my country & my students.

Hobbies? maths, puzzles, swimming & football.

ADMC? Strengths = good teachers & good technology.

Position: heart surgeon

Ahmed introduced himself satisfactorily. He said he studied at Harvard Medical Centre in the USA. He said our hospital has good facilities.

He said a heart surgeon has to be able to work under pressure at all hours of the day.

Goals? To help all my patients & support my family.

Hobbies? Swimming, soccer, volleyball, working out.

Hedley closed the interview at 1125.

Position: video game developer

Mohd introduced himself confidently and well.

One of his strengths was that he possesses a large data base.

His weakness lies in remembering codes.

He asked if he would be working as an individual or in a team.

Position: test driver

Abdulla introduced himself and said he'd been driving for several years & had experience of super sports cars, both driving & servicing them.

When asked about the dangers of the job, he emphasised how important safety preparations & regular checks on the cars were.

He said he'd heard nothing negative about this company.

Adel said his outside interests were machines and working on them. He said he could work under pressure.

Position: mechanical engineer with army

Why do you want to join the army? To serve my country.

What are the strengths of ADMC? Use of English & good preparation for the workplace.

Work under pressure? I study hard & help my family at all times; there is always pressure.

Goals? To gain respect.

Position: drum teacher in music institute

Are you creative? I write music & customize guitars.

Role model? Dave Mustaine, a highly-politicised singer.

Strength? Enthusiasm and hard work. I work well under pressure. Weakness? I forget to give myself a physical or mental break.

Goal? Create my own orchestra.

Other interests? Soccer, basketball, table tennis.

Position: football coach, Barcelona

After initial greetings, Aziz introduced himself well.

Goal? It had always been to coach Barcelona. He admires Barcelona FC because it represents not only Spain but also Catalonia. He said he needed to take Spanish classes and, because of the number of Brazilian players, maybe Portuguese too.

Pressure? A football coach is always under pressure. Coping with it is my greatest strength.

Ambition? Long term role with FIFA.

Position: mechanical technician

Usual greetings and introductions.

Adel: why should I hire you? I have experience in the Takreer refinery in Ruwais & I've successfully completed several courses.

Why do you want to work for us? Your company gives good training and has a good reputation.

Salary expected? Dhs 20,000 at present, but, to be honest, I'm more interested in the job & in improving myself.

Ahmed Mohd: what are your outside interests? I own the Golden Car repair workshop. I also like football & volleyball.

Work nights & weekends? I already do this.

Are you creative? I think I'm imaginative.

Position: pilot

Hedley welcomed Naser & performed the usual introductions & greetings.

Abdul Aziz: are you a student? Yes, but being a pilot has always been my dream. I'd rather be a pilot than a mechanic. Can you work under pressure? Yes, it's part of a pilot's job. Where do you see yourself in 3 years time? No positive response.

Alabed: what is your greatest strength? I'm not worried about height or noise. I love aeroplanes & flying.

Position: accountant

Hedley greeted and introduced Jumaa. Why did he want to be an accountant? Because he likes maths.

Abdul Aziz: what is your greatest strength? Maths. Can you work under pressure?
Yes, e.g. exams at ADMC. What is the role of a good accountant? No real answer.

Alabed: why should we hire you? I've got good English & computer skills/qualifications. Salary? Not bothered; I've applied to you because you are a good company. Outside interests? Football: I support Al Wahda & Inter Milan.

Interviewers: Hedley, Faisal & Abdulla Ali Al Alawi

Position: pilot for Etihad

Hedley welcomed Ghaith & performed introductions. Ghaith introduced himself & said he'd always had a dream to fly a commercial airliner. He said he owned a Cessna & had done several hours solo.

Faisal: why do you want to work for us? It's one of the best airlines in the world, with modern aeroplanes; good salary, working conditions, hours & job security. What is the role of a good pilot? To handle pressure situations; either you're a good pilot or you're not a pilot at all.

Abdulla Ali: goals? Fly a jumbo jet. Outside interests? working with jet & car engines. I like to know how things work. I'm not interested in salary; I just want to be a commercial pilot.

Position: drilling well engineer

After welcome and introductions, Saeed talked about himself, including his experience of working in Wales.

Faisal: give me an example of a pressure situation you've dealt with? During equipment failure, I've had to get people to safety before dealing with the malfunction. Strengths? I work under pressure; I'm experienced; I have great self-control.

Abdulla: Have you heard anything negative about us? No, I wouldn't be applying if I had. Outside interests? Football: I used to play for Al Jazira. Work at night/ weekends? I already do this in emergency situations.

Saeed had no questions for the panel.

Position: soccer player with Juventus

Hedley welcomed Mubarak, introduced the intererviewing panel & invited the candidate to introduce himself. He said he was 19, lived in AD & studied at ADMC.

Aziz: position? Midfielder. I'm a playmaker. Strength? My spirit. Coach? He's very good; not lost in 24 matches.

Ahmed Omar: outside interests? Swimming. Every day I go swimming at the club; then I play football with my friends. Salary? High. Area of improvement? Fitness.


Mubarak asked what his responsibilities would be & Aziz told him linking defence to attack & conscientious tackling.

Interviewers: Hedley, Aziz & Ahmed Omar

Position: astrophysicist (private consultant)

Faisal said he was studying mecatronics but wanted to be an astrophysicist. He'd studied astrophysics & was fascinated by the cosmos & how it works.

Aziz: greatest weakness? Communication skills; I'm working on this & also on public speaking. I get nervous but I'm trying to overcome this. I need to improve my body language & reduce my anxiety levels. Outside interests? Martial arts.

Ahmed Omar: why should we hire you? I'm passionate about, and fascinated by, the cosmos, black holes & other phenomena. Greatest strength? Patient, team worker. Where do you see yourself in 3 years time? I want to get a master's in aerospace & PhD in astrophysics.
